Lichfield’s historic buildings, streets and shopfronts contribute significantly to the character and identity of the city centre. The Council is working to protect and enhance this heritage while supporting businesses and property owners to improve their premises.
The shopfront improvement project forms part of the Council’s wider work to support the regeneration of Lichfield city centre. It provides guidance and funding to encourage high-quality shopfront improvements that are appropriate to the character of the city’s historic environment.
The City Centre Shopfront Design Code, adopted in May 2026, provides guidance on how shopfronts can be designed or improved to complement the character of individual buildings and the wider streetscape. It does not mean that shopfronts should all look the same, but encourages designs that are appropriate to the building, its surroundings and the needs of the business.
To support this work, the Council has established a £400,000 Heritage Shopfront Grant Scheme. Eligible businesses and property owners within the Lichfield City Centre Conservation Area can apply for grants of up to £30,000 towards improvements such as restoring historic features, updating signage and lighting, removing inappropriate modern additions or improving accessibility. Expressions of Interest will be considered on a rolling basis until 31 March 2028, subject to funding remaining available.
