Cinema plaza development

Lichfield city centre cinema plaza

Construction on the eagerly awaited cinema plaza in Lichfield is scheduled to start this month. The transformation of the multi-storey car park on Birmingham Road is a significant step in creating this new vibrant area.

Important dates and initial actions

The multi-storey car park on Birmingham Road will close on Monday, May 27 at midnight. Demolition begins on Tuesday, May 28, and will be carried out by Cawarden, a specialist contractor, over the next 26 weeks.

The demolition will include the car park and four units at the top of the Three Spires shopping centre to make way for a new open-air public area in front of the cinema. The shopping centre will remain open throughout the construction.

Hoardings will be erected around the site to ensure everyone’s safety. Initially, these hoardings will be white and later replaced with printed graphics depicting the future look of the plaza.

Recycling and reusing demolished materials

There is a target for this project to reuse over 98% of the demolished materials. The concrete will be crushed to create hard landscaping on the development. This recycling objective was a key requirement of our selected contractor and will reduce the impact on the environment by keeping materials on site so that transport of goods will not be required.

Temporary activities and community involvement

During the redevelopment, the former car park site will become a hub for temporary activities, including pop-up retail, exhibitions, and food events, focusing on supporting local start-ups and businesses. Details on how to get involved will be shared soon.

Alternative parking and accessibility

Numerous alternative parking options are available in Lichfield city centre, including short and long stay. We will ensure that signage, social media, local publications, and posters guide you to these alternatives conveniently.

Council’s vision and ongoing engagement

Councillor Andy Smith, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Leisure, Parks, and Major Projects, shares his enthusiasm: “The demolition of the multi-storey car park is a crucial move towards revitalizing this part of the city centre. Our contractors will ensure the site remains safe and tidy. We’ve included peepholes in the hoardings for everyone to watch the progress. We value your feedback and encourage you to reach out to our Project Officer for the car park demolition, Karen Higgins, at karen.higgins@lichfielddc.gov.uk.
